CBD Terpenes

Even though you might not have heard of terpenes, they are everywhere. You could say you have at least one food rich in terpenes every day. Terpenes are organic compounds found in plants, fruits, and vegetables that give a unique aroma. It is also present in hemp, the plant from which CBD is usually extracted. This means that the CBD you have will also have terpenes. But, not all CBD extracts have terpenes.

CBD extracts available in the market are of three types- full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate CBD. Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD have other organic compounds along with CBD. On the other hand, isolate CBD contains only CBD.  So, in short, two spectrums of CBD have terpenes.

Different Terpenes Found In CBD Extract

There are a variety of CBD terpenes. However, only a few of them are present in noticeable quantities. These are:

Pinene

Pinene is a terpene found dominantly in pine needles. They play an important role in Chinese medicine. It is often said to have anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and other therapeutic properties.

Linalool

You might remember it better if you relate it to lavender. Linalool is the terpene that gives lavender its sweet smell. It is often added to beauty products to make it smell good and because of its anti-anxiety properties which make sleeping easy.

Myrcene

Myrcene is the smallest terpene and is the compound that gives cannabis its typical earthly smell. Other than its smell, myrcene has anti-bacterial properties which add to the overall effect of the CBD extract. It weakens the muscles and induces sleep. It also has properties that reduce pain.

Limonene

This terpene is found in citrus fruits and has a lemony smell. It is known for its anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties.

Caryophyllene

Found in black pepper, cloves, and cinnamon, this compound has a woody aroma. Unlike other terpenes, caryophyllene can react directly with the endocannabinoid system and reduce inflammation.

What Are CBD Terpenes Used For?

CBD terpenes affect the overall performance of the CBD extract. Not only does it individually have amazing properties, but also enhances the qualities of CBD. This is called the entourage effect. According to this phenomenon, the presence of additional compounds like terpenes and other cannabinoids intensifies the effect of CBD on the body. In other words, all the organic compounds work together to provide a better, highlighted effect.

However, ensure that you are not allergic to any of them before you take full-spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD extract.
